Why Is My Bing Cherry Tree Weeping Clear Fluid From Its Trunk?
Question by Kathy: Why is my bing cherry tree weeping clear fluid from its trunk?
I have a 50 year old cherry tree with a crack in its trunk. It is usually wet appearing around the mid trunk near a “crack” area in its trunk. What can I do to fix this problem and what is wrong with this cherry tree? Does it have a borer?

It sounds as if you have one of two things.First guess would be bacterial canker or gummosis.I cant say for sure as i cant see the tree. But ill tell you a little about both. The gummosis is geared towards peach trees however my book says other stone fruit may be affected. If this is the case you will need to trim were you might find ozing of the sap. There is no chemical treatmant for this .Im not going into great detail on this due to the fact i dont think you have a target host. What i think you have is canker it fits cherrys better and targets sweet cherrys even more. You will need to look at the leaves and see if you have necrotic spots and yellowing of the leaves.Look at limbs for canker it will be a knuckle like with the bark spliting and releasing some gum.The tree could heal it self with in the year however if you see it the next year you will need to treat with a copper based spray. However some trees are somewhat injured from copper sprays. So spray during dormant season up to tight cluster.I hope this helps you with your problem look up both and see if you can find pics of trees with theses illnesses and see if they match if not up date your question and we will find what your problem is also what state do you live in.If in michigan or near by states please advise of so.
