Why Does the Fact That Drugs Are Bad for You…?

Question by 5 dollar footlong: Why does the fact that drugs are bad for you…?
…warrant keeping it illegal? If we illegalized everything unhealthy in society on the premise that “it is bad for you”, almost everything would be banned and everything our culture revolves around (fast food, TV, video games, going to bars, etc.) would go down the toilet. Is the government supposed to be our mom and slap us on the wrist and tell us what’s bad for us?

And is putting someone in jail, fining them, taking away any scholarships they might have, and putting a mark on their record that will keep them from getting a job really helping them? If they really are addicted to drugs, isn’t that punishment enough already?

I can at least understand why some think crystalmeth, heroin, crack, PCP, etc. should be illegal. These are all synthetic chemicals that are ENGINEERED for human addiction, that completely destroy people. But some “drugs” like marijuana, peyote, DMT, salvia, etc. are naturally growing herbs that have been used as entheogens as thousands of years, have valid spiritual uses, and some have even shown to have “anti-addictive” properties, and these are thrown in with the bunch and banned too. Does this really make sense? Should we arrest God for growing these substances?
Phynx: And arsenic is a perfectly legal additive. It’s in the Muscle Milk that I used to take (and stopped taking for that reason). Poisonous mushrooms are also bad for you, but they’re legal. Hallucinogenic ones, however, are not.
And no they’re banned because there is a huge cultural bias against them and an unfounded hatred towards those who use them.
@TAT: Don’t be a fool. Noone thinks people should be excused from crimes they do simply because they were under the influence. You are just looking for stupid excuses to convince yourself that what you think is right. And read the full question, I said I can understand why crack and meth are illegal.
Phynx: Yeah I know. I’m not at all implying that. But how are you going to ban a “substance”, no, a species, that grows out of the ground naturally? And while natural doesn’t necessarily mean healthy, you are unlikely to find a natural occuring material to be as addictive as the likes of crack, heroin, etc.
TAT: What the hell have you been watching, Reefer Madness? Where the hell do you get this idea that “drugs will flood the streets” from and our society will descend into a stateless anarchy if we let people do what they want in their own home? We survived all the way up from 1776 till the early 20th century with NO ILLEGAL DRUGS WHATSOEVER and society and order was maintained. Mankind has survived for milenniums in coexistence with marijuana…it has only been illegal for 73 years. And I am not talking just about marijuana, I am talking about ANYTHING that grows naturally out of the ground. How are you going to stop that from happening?
TAT: And why do I have to be a pothead to support legalization? There are straight people that support gay marriage, and blacks and women that are opposed to affirmative action. People can overcome their self-bias. Apparently you can’t.

I have never smoked pot in my life, never done tobacco, and never done alcohol. But I fully support any one’s right to do so.

And yes I know pot is classified as a hallucinogen. Like that would change anything in the slightest bit.
@TAT: Haha wow, ok. I give up. I did not ask this question thinking I was going to change anyone’s mind. I just did it to reveal your stupidity to the people who see this question and have rational thought. And when you have to condescend that much to people who have different views than you and stereotype them you know you are desperate for an argument. It is utterly impossible to bust through the stubborn wall of ignorance you have set up for yourself.

You have been an addictions counselor for 20 years. Drugs are illegal, yet you have spent your LIFE helping people who are addicted to drugs get off them. Just goes to show how that’s working. Put 2 and 2 together yet?

So what if they’re natural? You know what else is natural? Arsenic.

Now, I’m not saying that marijuana is like arsenic, I’m just saying your reasoning is flawed. These drugs are banned because they cause an altered state of reasoning that causes people to do really really stupid things.

Edit: Sorry, I should have made myself more clear. I’m just trying to say that natural doesn’t mean healthy.
