Why Are Many Highly Potent Drugs Illegal?

Question by krwoswsr82: Why are many highly potent drugs illegal?
Why are highly potent drugs like cocaine, heroin, and meth illegal? For instance, I don’t understand what people mean when they say “they are a danger to society.” Why exactly is that?

What, for example, was the *original* reason for making cocaine illegal?

Because they are mind altering drugs which can cause mental harm, physical harm, and physical harm indirectly caused by the drugs’ effects on the mind (like being high on LSD and jumping into an empty pool because you hallucinate and see water in the pool; that actually happened once). This makes them a danger to both themselves and other people. So the government is right to keep them illegal them.

The 3 drugs you named are very addictive and can easily make a person violent. But marijuana is illegal and that is less dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes. Trying to make sense of the laws that the government makes is impossible.
