Why Are Alot of People Stereotypical Towards a Person With Tattoos or Piercings?

Question by loz: Why are alot of people stereotypical towards a person with tattoos or piercings?
I have 2 tattoos and getting a third soon, all with a deep meaning behind, I also have a lip piercing, it frustrates me people think that this makes us rebellious and ‘bad news’ as older generations would say. I have these yet I’m a straight A student and do volunteer work and spent 600 pound of my own money to go Lourdes to help sick and elderly people, I also know alot of people with tattoos who do the same type of things as me. So why do peoplehave this bad stereotype? Thanks 🙂
In response to the first answer, how is it scary? It’s ink, it can’t hurt you, it’s like writing a note on your hand but it can’t be washed off. This is what I don’t understand, why would you just automatically be afraid of someone from art on their bodies :/
Erm ‘truth’ I’m usin some of the things I’ve done as an example that we aren’t all ‘thugs’ And considering my tattoos are memorials for best friends I doubt that I like things like rotting skulls and daggers, self centred people wouldn’t put themselves in debt as I took out a loan to help people less fortunate than myself. and how on earth is me having tributes to my friends hurtfull to your emotions if you walked past me in the street? Youre the type of person that frustrates me.

Because it looks scary. I don’t hate the person but it’s scary.

People are not used to it. Trust me. I have almost half my hair pink other half black and I have a lip piercing. People on the streets like to stare and give me dirty looks. It’s usually the older people but my little cousin about !0 years old said my belly piercing is ugly and so is my hair and lip piercing. and she asked why i did it. i told her i liked it and it was a way of expressing my individuality. At work however no one gives me dirty looks except for a couple teachers. (I work in a morning program with elementary school kids) none of the parents give me a hard time. I just smile big and say “good morning” Most people don’t like “different” they like what they are used to.
