When I Visit a Website, What Information Can the Site Collect About My Visit and How Is It Gathered?
Question by Matthew M: When I visit a website, what information can the site collect about my visit and how is it gathered?
I’m specifically interested in what information can by gathered about my computer configuration, sites I visited before arriving, my search behavior if I came from a search engine, the search ad I might have clicked on, etc. Is the data collected through the URL string, from cookies, from other technology? Are there good resources on the web that will really help me understand all the things that can be collected and the method for getting them?

It depends on what browser you use, and whether or not you are behind a firewall.
Past that, it is dependent on what information you provide voluntarily.
