Question by Koko K: Don’t know what to do, my mother in law actually is having a psychotic break.?
So here is the scoop, my fiance and I live with his grandparents to help take care of them. He grandmother has Alzheimers. His mother moved back from New Hampshire a couple years ago to help out. (We’re in CA).

When she moved out here, she decided to see the same psychiatrist that my fiance sees. He has ADD and takes Adderall for it. The Dr. put her on the same meds. At first things were OK, put then it seems that her mental state has really been debatable. It has really gotten a lot worse in the past couple weeks. Let me run down some things she has done in the couple weeks,

Both Professionally & From Personal Experience, Are Psychosis & Delusional Behavior Experienced W/ Meth Use?

Question by Kate Keeling PT: Both Professionally & from personal experience, are Psychosis & Delusional Behavior experienced w/ meth use?
A young man I know has schizophrenia, but also a history of meth and marijuana abuse from 6th grade. Since Schizophrenia is a genetic disorder, mostly, he and I were wondering how much and at what point was the drug use a cover up for the Schizophrenia? He admits that he has never told anyone all of what he experiences or has experienced. He is afraid of being seen as too crazy. For social services and insight for his own benefit. it is somewhat important to identify when the schizophrenia began, in force, especially if it was while he was still a dependent. I would be interested in hearing professionals and persons who have had similar experiences or used meth and marijuana from a young age. I want to know if it was self medication for physical, psychosocial, psychological problems. And if any male Schizophrenic persons has had or gradually had more insight to when and what were your earliest symptoms and, “signs” that something just was not right.I am a strong advocate for persons with serious mental illness and I will be Tweeting and Blogging about it and issues around and binding these individuals! At this point I want to help this young man by advocating for him.

How Do You Deal With a Seriously Bi-Polar Loved One When He/she Is in Denial?

Question by Nani: How do you deal with a seriously Bi-Polar loved one when he/she is in denial?
Recently, I noticed a pattern in a loved one’s behaviour. It was an eye-opening experience, because she had all the classic symptoms of being Bi-Polar and then some. During her manic swings she is the most positive and loving person on earth, and generous to a fault. During her ‘depressive’ moods she’s like a pit-viper, angry, sullen, and ready to seriously maim the heart and spirit with cruel criticism, insults, and ridicule…even in front of other people. I’ve witnessed her vascillating between the two modes several times in one day. Yet, when I mention that she might get some medical help, she vehemently counters that there is nothing wrong with her, it’s just her. I worry about what this is doing to her physically as well as mentally. Any tricks for coping, other than just running away and hiding until the ‘bombing’ stops? I’ve already tried leaving informational brochures around for her to find. It makes her mad. She won’t even allow a discussion.

Does “abuse” by Another Cause a Person to Have a Psychiatric Disorder? What Is the Diagnosis in This Case?

Question by HREPrincess: Does “abuse” by another cause a person to have a psychiatric disorder? What is the diagnosis in this case?
I’m writing about an individual who was oppressed, abused, ridiculed, and neglected during childhood to the point of not talking and hiding (even as a child of 2 or 3 hid in a closet to avoid the mother). This continued to some extent into teenage years. Many mistakes were made and opportunities lost even as an adult. The person is now able to join in conversations without the “tremendous” fear that was present in past years, joins in group activities, etc., but is still somewhat socially withdrawn. This person was “damaged” by another, but is this a psychiatric disorder? The person is very intelligent (IQ 150+) and has no problem conversing about common interests. One otherwise would not be aware of the problem just to observe from a distance. This is definitely not Asperger’s. What is the diagnosis?
