Psychologists, Explain This Behavior?
Question by Frank Ozbourne: Psychologists, explain this behavior?
I am 17 years old. Born in 1993. Grew up with cartoons, video games, and commercial toys.
When I was 15, I began purchasing toys. I stopped buying toys by the time was 10 years old. I bought around $ 20 worth of toys that year. As a junior that number rose to $ 60. As of now, I am 18 years old, but I have plans of $ 300 worth of toys/games to purchase.
The majority of these purchases are nostalgic– toys/games that I’ve seen as a kid, but never purchased. None of these are video games/electronics. All of them are below my age level.
Ex:
Lego
Pokemon toys
Beyblade toys
Trading cards
My initial purchase in sophomore year was a result of extra pocket money and a tough time in high school. I felt very trapped and unhappy at the work that seemingly led to nowhere. I was not motivated by myself. The amount of pocket money I had as I became a junior, and senior rose. I began to save my allowance as a junior and started looking for sale periods (Black friday, weekly ad discounts) as a senior.
WHY????
How should I deal with this? I feel that it is wasting my time and driving me nuts although the toys do bring me happiness.
Thank you for reading this post and responding.

First of all, there is nothing wrong with getting enjoyment out of games. But, if you feel that its ruining your life in some way, the best attack on this sort of an “addiction,” lets say, would be to get a change of lifestyle. People trying to get over things like alcohol and meth addictions recover best when they have a change of environments, change of friends, and a change in atttitude towards their addiction. However, if you feel that your friends and environment aren’t the problem, then you need to focus on your attitude towards toys.
If you see them as something you “need” to get through the day, then perhaps it’s time to go see a cognitive/behavioural psychologist and get help. Basically they will help you change the way you thoughts and/or actions so that dealing with the problem becomes manageable.
I can’t tell you why you have come to think or behave this way, as their are inumerable explanations in psychology to make it seem logical. But if it’s really something you are struggling with, seek expert advise.
