I’m Taking Hydrocodone for Back Pain… but I Have a Drug Test Coming Up. Should I Be Worried?

Question by Warm Librarianette: I’m taking Hydrocodone for back pain… but I have a drug test coming up. Should I be worried?
I’m starting a new job in a few days, but I have to take a mandatory drug test before starting. I recently had a severe injury to my upper back and, thus, my doctor has prescribed a low dose of hydrocodone/Tylenol to treat the pain. Should I be worried about the results? Is there some way of saying, “Hey! I’ve actually been prescribed a naughty thing for a real health problem!”?

Additionally, if it is relevant, I live in a part of the country that has historically had problems with pain medication abuse, specifically Oxycontin. Some people “shop” doctors to get a prescription. That’s why I’m especially worried.

I think it would be okay as long as you have your doctors permission. Bring in a doctors note and make sure you’re up front about it to your employers.

Not if you’re prescribed the meds. Either bring the bottle or show a copy of your prescription.
