How Do I Find a Lawyer Who Does Pro Bono Work?

Question by : How do I find a lawyer who does pro bono work?
I am in desperate need of an Attorney who can help me to keep the father of my children out of their lives until he receives treatment for substance abuse and anger management. I cannot afford to pay for an attorney and I was hoping someone may be able to guide me in the right direction. Thanx!

firms that have pro bono attorneys are not interested in mundane law. They do their pro bono on constitutional questions, death penalty appeals and major cases that will get them attention and more paying clients.

You are not looking for a pro bono lawyer – you are looking for free or cheap representation. You should start with your states legal assistance services and see if you qualify. If you do not, try your states Board of Bar Overseers. Some states have a volunteer list of lawyers who may help you.

Unfortunately, the number of attorneys who are available to do pro bono work are a drop in the bucket compared to the people who need free attorneys.

You can try contacting your state or county bar association. Most counties have “legal services” division that will often operated right out of (or close to) the county courthouse.

If there is a law school near where you live, you can check to see if they have a Family Law clinic.
