How Can I Stop the Peeling on My New Tattoo?

Question by pistachiored: How can I stop the peeling on my new tattoo?
I got my second tattoo five days ago. It’s a phoenix design on my lower back, but the skin is peeling in little flakes of color. This didn’t happen with my first. Just a minor brush against it will cause some skin to fall off (my shirt had flakes all over it yesterday). It is scabbed in some areas, but the rest of it’s just flaky. I use “Aveeno Non-Scented All Day Moisture” three times a day (which is what the artist told me to use). Is there something else I should try? Will the flaking cause it to look messed up when it heals?

It also itches like a mofo.

Peeling and flaking of a new tattoo is perfectly normal. Before it actually begins to peel, the tattoo will look like it’s covered with a whitish, cracking film. Then you’ll see white or translucent flakes of old, dead skin start to peel off and some of the flakes may even contain some ink. Sometimes you can actually see a duplicate image of part of your tattoo peeling off – it’s rather disconcerting, but it is also perfectly normal and there is no need to panic. It’s a lot like a snake shedding its skin. Just add a little lotion (a LITTLE) to the tattoo to help keep it moist and encourage those flakes to come off. Do NOT scratch, pick or peel them. It will all be done in a few days and the color of your tattoo will start to return to normal.

You are doing right by listening to what the artist said. Also get yourself some bactracin. Thats an antibiotic that is over the counter. It will help w/ the itching as well or you can get some neosporin w/ pain reliever in it. That stuff works really good for itching AND keeps the moisture in that you need. I used that when I got my flag on my shoulder. Really helped a lot. Just remember, DONT PICK IT! Thats a big no no. If you start developing a fever though for no reason, see your doctor cause it could have become infected. That happened w/ my first tattoo on my ankle. Just take care of it and it will be fine.
