Does Anyone Remember a Movie Made for Tv About a Young Girl Whose Parents Were Both Addicts?
Question by ru4pc: Does anyone remember a movie made for tv about a young girl whose parents were both addicts?
She got the opportunity to write a byline I believe for the NY Times or Post. She actually had a sister. She became homeless, her mother died, and in the movie her father was in a hospital being treated for AIDS. I can’t remember her name or the name of the movie.

ru4pc – I believe this is the WONDERFUL movie you were looking for:
HOMELESS TO HARVARD
“Elizabeth Murray (Thora Birch) was a child raised by a couple of the worst parents a kid could have; her mother Jean (Kelly Lynch) is a legally blind schizophrenic cocaine/heroin addict who instead of using her welfare money to feel her family, spends the money on more drugs. Her dad isnít much better, as he too is a drug addict, and though heís not abusive towards his children he’s pretty much aloof regarding all of the problems surrounding he and his family ñ though he is obviously intelligent because he gets all the answers right on Jeopardy and is constantly reading.
The story starts with Liz as a pre-teen fighting to keep her family together. While she hates the situations that her parents have got her in, she does everything she can to keep the family unit (she also has a sister) from falling apart. She doesnít attend school very often, though she is also very intelligent as evidenced by the fact that when she does show up at school, she gets a perfect score on a test the teacher gives. Like her father, sheís a reader and benefits from the nearly complete set of encyclopedias that her trash-hunting neighbor found at a dump site.
Her mother is in and out of the nuthouse due to her schizophrenic condition and city workers are constantly warning the family that if they donít clean up the house and make sure Liz goes to school, theyíre going to send her to a group home. After one of these trips to the hospital, Jean makes a decision that she must move away from Lizís dad in order to stay clean. Liz has a choice: join her mother and sister at her grandfatherís place, or stay with her dad. Thinking it will help keep the family together, she stays with her dad. Oh yeah, when Jean is telling Liz all of this, she also informs her that she is now a legally blind schizophrenic coke/heroin addict AIDS patient. Quite a load to lay on a kid.”
