Do I Have Some Kind of Syndrome?

Question by Turtle: Do I have some kind of syndrome?
There are tons of syndromes and disorders out there and the like, and after realising some of my more major quirks and oddities, I’ve thought to myself a few times that perhaps I have something that “makes me” like this.

To get straight to the point, I NEED rhythm. Even patterns. Meaning, I absolutely despise random noises that don’t come in patterns (like a water faucet dripping at an inconsistent pace), and get headaches and get very irritated when they are around. If I’m not tapping on my desk in school, I’m clicking my teeth in some kind of rhythm. I’m always tapping my feet, and sometimes in conversation, I almost start… sort of rapping. Not really, but I do speak with a very rhythmic tone. It’s as if I cannot escape rhythm in general.

I’m also ALWAYS listening to music. And when I’m not, I just… get flat out MAD. Very cynical, hateful, negative and etc. It’s horrible. I thought maybe I have tourettes or something, but that doesn’t seem right at all, because the tics that people with TS are NONrhythmic, so that didn’t seem right.

Also, it bothers me whenever things are not in patterns or organised. Less of the organisation, more of the patterns and such. My room is messy, so I know I’m not a neat freak, but I absolutely DESPISE it when things are not in a pattern. I suppose it would actually be more accurate to say that I loathe unsymmetrical things. If I crack my left index finger, I get very annoyed if I cannot crack the right. And then, I have to also crack the rest of my fingers, or else it wouldn’t be an absolutely perfect set.

TL;DR – I adore rhythm, symmetry and patterns TOO much, almost to the point of addiction.

So does anyone have any ideas? Or maybe I’m just really weird?

wat do?

It sounds like you have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I can’t be sure, seeing as though I am not a mental professional.

You sound like an instrumentalist to me—maybe a percussionist. You would probably be great on the drums or keyboard. Why not consider taking that up?

I don’t think you have a “syndrome.” What you’re describing are some of the “symptoms” of being intelligent and having a strong natural gift for music. Unfortunately intelligence is rare enough that when it appears it seems like an abnormality. It’s actually people who don’t appreciate patterns, symmetry, and rhythms that are lacking something. There’s nothing “wrong” with them either—but you have something (good) that they don’t.

What do you think? Answer below!
