Is It Safe to Let a House Sit Without Heat?

Question by Tevin: Is it safe to let a house sit without heat?
My job is to keep and eye on my friends house because he is living in Florida. But he has not lived in it for almost 2 years. He lost his job a while ago in Florida so this could explain why. But I went to check on the house because so many bad things have been going on in my town. So I checked on it and their was no power. Checked on it again 2 weeks later still no power. Then I found a P&G Meter removal message from the electric company on the door. And the weather has been very cold. 30*F and 50 in daytime. Is this bad for electronics? and walls, paint? I drained the water out of the pipes today so I don’t have to worry about flooding.

Electronics should not be effected unless they have a liquid that can freeze inside of them.
It sounds like you tried to winterize the house by draining the water lines.
Now you need to inject “safe” antifreeze or the small puddles of water in the low spots can freeze and crack the pipes.
Anywhere there is standing water needs to be addressed.
I allowed a toilet to freeze and it cracked a big hole in the bottom of it.
House plants will not survive.
Other problems could arise so the best thing to do, is to try to keep the place above freezing.
Get the power turned on and keep the thermostat at it’s lowest setting.
45 degrees (F) should be good.
