Why Do People Insist on Putting the Letter S at the End of the Word Methamphetamine?

Question by Curious: Why do people insist on putting the letter S at the end of the word methamphetamine?
Amphetamine is a drug and chemical compound of its own. Methamphetamine is a drug and chemical compound of its own. Amphetamine and Methamphetamine belong to a class of drugs known as the Amphetamines, but there is no such thing as a class of drugs called the Methamphetamines. You don’t take 4 or 5 Methamphetamines. You might take 4 or 5 GRAMS of methamphetamine, but never 4 or 5 methamphetamines. You don’t say “He was on Methamphetamines!” You may however say “He was on 3 different Amphetamines.” So why do so many people say “Methamphetamines” a word that does not exist. Yahoo Answers spell checker is even reporting that “Methamphetamines” is not a word. Anyone?

Just a lack of information.

Few people are intimately acquainted with the details of the word.

If there is only one type of methamphetamine, then the “s” is redundant, but with more than one type then the plural indicates an unspecified version.
