What Material Should I Use for My Kitchen Counter and Backsplash?

Question by AnnaB: What material should I use for my kitchen counter and backsplash?
Thanks for helping- I am doing a remodel and need to pick a new material to use for the kitchen counter and backsplash. I would like to use the same material for both, if possible, because I like the uniform look. Marble, granet, tile, etc? In your answer please tell me WHY you like it and, if possible, why you don’t like the other surfances. Will it stain? Chip? What if I cut on it? Also, do you have any suggestions of web sites with pics I can look at? Color suggestions? Is dark or light better? Thanks!
Good point- My place is up in the mountains in New York. It does get very cold in the winter, and sometimes the place isn’t heated. So, the material would need to be ok with freezing temps.

Granite is beautiful, and it comes in different colors.

Well, first of all you must set your budget. Granite is beautiful, but so is copper, ceramic tile, etc. Wood is beautiful on the counters and the walls. Go to many home improvement centers and take note of what you like. I love dark in a kitchen, but I have an all white kitchen and recently put color on my walls and my friends hated it. They loved the all white. I didn’t use any back splash. I just have a white wooden border around my tile counter tops. I just paint it and clean it. I am making a tile back splash for my range.
