Symbolic interactionism looks at a sociological issue from the “view” perspective. It examines and `gives meaning to the one dresses, talks, behaves, and believes in. Our society views drug abuse as a negative societal problem that needs to be addressed using police intervention and harsh prison sentences. The issue of drug abuse is complicated because society views the use of “legal” drugs, ie: prescription medication, as something different or less destructive than “illegal” drug abuse. According to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World (FDFW) “Prescription drug abuse, while most prevalent in the US, is a problem in many areas around the world including Europe, Southern Africa and South Asia. In the US alone, more than 15 million people abuse prescription drugs, more than the combined number who reported abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants and heroin.” The stereotype of a drug addict is usually someone from a deprived socioeconomics background who does not have a lot of family support or resources. This does not fit the user of prescription drugs. The “new drug addict” stereotype now consists of “soccer moms”, and privileged young people who are getting their “fix” from their parents medicine cabinet.
With this new stereotype of drug abuse, the consequences of this use are harder to identify. Normally, when a person is addicted to drugs like heroin or crack cocaine they are easily identified due to their inability to function at a job or to take care of their family. A prescription abuser may not even realize they are an addict due to their “dealer” being a doctor. If a person is not educated to the risk factors to addiction before they take prescription drugs they may not know they are at risk to becoming an addict. According to the National Center for Health Statistics or NCHS, “Over the last 10 years, the percentage of Americans who took at least one prescription drug in the past month increased from 44% to 48%. The use of two or more drugs increased from 25% to 31%. The use of five or more drugs increased from 6% to 11%.” This creates a sociological problem that is new to this generation. The stereotype of a drug addict is now changing before the addict realizes that they are addicted. This means that the people who are in desperate need of drug treatment will not receive it because from an interactioist perspective they do not fit the description. This can have devastating effects on families and society at large.From a functionalist perspective, the prescription drug abuser is enabled by society to continue to use, despite multiple problems in functioning. When an individual has a prescription from doctor and is abusing their pills it is hard to intervene from a punitive prespective. If a person is stopped by the police and they have a prescription for the medication they are abusing,, they will not experience the same consequences as a prson who is found with crack cocaine on them, This has an enabling effect on the individual and society at large. This is dangerous because this means that more people can be driving under the influence and putting others at risk. Another example of the overall dysfunction is when society views prescription drug abuse as less dangerous and more acceptable because it is stemming from legal drugs. Young people are vulnerable to this kind of drug abuse because the addictive substance is coming from inside their own medicine cabinet.

Yes, parents do need to perhaps keep a lock on their medicine cabinet and talk to their children about the dangers of the misuse of prescription medication.
I also wanted to elaborate on the dangers of inhalant use (deliberately inhaling fumes or chemical vapors). My friend has a severe BRAIN INJURY from “huffing” at the age of 12, now in her 30s.
Other risks of inhalant use are sight loss/blindness, heart/liver/kidney damage, seizures, limb spasms, hearing loss, bone marrow (the fatty inner lining of bones that makes blood cells) damage and even death, all of which can happen after the very FIRST time of use.
