How Do You Explain to Your Child What a Crackhead Is?
Question by mizeyekandi: How do you explain to your child what a crackhead is?
I have an 8 year old son he enjoys playing games on the computer. He is pretty smart and is able to navigate his way through the internet. We had those conversations about what you are allowed to do and what is considered inappropiate. He has followed these rules and i always make sure by checking the history of his activities. While doing so, i noticed that he googled “crackhead” when i asked him about it, he said he wanted to know what it is. i want to explain it to him, but i don’t want to be too graphic or say the wrong things, and i don’t want to leave him still wondering about it. please help!!
Thanks to everyone for their answers, i appreciate it, i also thought i would scare the hell out of him as well, but i am not so sure, my mom was never open about things like this and i want him to feel comfortable to come to me about anything. i will use everyone’s advice because they are great! thanks so much again!
so after beginning to tell him about the drug, he starts giving his opinion and wants to discuss and debate. He said oh i thought crackheads live in a crackhouse. So now, i am asking where are you getting this from? he says Jeanine, from house of pain. oh my goodness, this conversation is going to take longer than expected. at least i know it wasn’t from any of his friends, and he didn’t witness any craziness while playing outside with his friends.

Just tell him it is a person who does the drug “Crack Cocaine”. Make sure you let him know it is very bad, very addicting, and very illegal. Make sure to tell him that doing any type of drug is very harmful and can get you in big trouble.
You could also tell him that crack and other drugs kill people. I don’t think 8 years old is too young to hear that stuff, kids are starting to use drugs earlier and earlier all the time.
Edit: Okay, about the crackhouse: Tell him yes, some of them do live in crackhouses, which are run-down abandoned houses that they make the drug in and sleep at. A lot of these people started doing crack, and got so addicted that they lost their houses and sold all their stuff just to buy it because they can’t live without it. Once that happened, they became homeless. Some live in crackhouses with other crackheads, others still live on the street.
Oh, by the way, you might consider not letting him play games that are that graphic in nature, with the drugs/sex. I’d wait until he was a little older than 8 to play those games (but that’s just me, I’m in no way bashing your parenting).
