What Is the Average Healing Time for a Fracture of the Scaphoid Bone in the Wrist?
Question by Frank Lucas: What is the average healing time for a fracture of the scaphoid bone in the wrist?
Does it make a difference that the fracture or “crack” as the doctor called it was especially faint on the x-ray taken 1.5 weeks after the injury?
It is not displaced and will get the cast off 6.5 weeks after the injury. Need another cast?

The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured bone in the wrist, I fractured it myself a few years back. By the time your cast is off you will be well healed, in fact, I’m sure you will be healed before then. A lot of things depend on how well or fast it heals. Age is a big factor, the older you are, the longer it takes for bones to heal. That is something that you cannot control, but here is what you can:
Your diet – Stay away from foods high in sugar and basically just eat really nutritious foods that would be acceptable in any good diet.
Drink lots and lots of water and don’t do anything with your broken arm that you know you shouldn’t.
Rest up, you’ll heal just fine. Don’t over-work it when you get the cast off, but don’t baby it either. You will want to get your full range of motion back, so stretching it is the best you can do once the cast comes off.
***But most importantly, follow the doctor’s orders!
